Gotham Greek:
Design for different needs

| Three different clients requested a Greek version of the Gotham typeface by Tobias Frere-Jones. Initially, the fonts were designed for the Greek edition of Domino Magazine by Liberis Publications (the same typeface is also used for the American edition) with a licence for exclusive use for a year and only after permission for hellenisation was given. Two years later, the same font was requested for the redesign of 'Eleftheros Typos' newspaper and a year later, for the redesign of the 'Macedonia' newspaper. It is noted that the same font can differ as far as the Greek version is concerned. The Greek version is usually discussed in collaboration with the art director and every so often, various alternative designs are suggested. For example, in the case of 'Domino', the version of the font that was asked was the one that was as similar as possible to the Latin version, in a way that would ensure the most accurate rendering of the American edition to the Greek while, in the case of 'Macedonia', a different version was requested. |
